Can you save money on cat toys? Do you have to buy expensive cat accessories?

Does your cat love to play with a big ball of yarn attached to your knitting? How about claiming the shipping box your latest purchase from Amazon came in? Does she steal your gift wrapping bow from the table and hide it underneath the pillow?

 

Hi there my furry and not so furry friends,

Well, let me tell you, you have an absolutely normal cat. And I know, because I am one of them furry creatures that do all of the above

Now you might ask, ‘Why should I make something myself if I can buy it in the store?’ There is one simple answer to that question.

Money!

Yes, if you buy a cat teaser toy or cat wand you will spend at least $4 to $5. But a homemade wand will cost you maybe $1 or if you buy let’s say a gift bow at party city for $0.50 and a thin PVC pipe for $1.50, you can make 10 toys for $3. That is a big money saver and requires about 10 minutes of your time.

Let’s look at cardboard cat cubes or cardboard cat condos. I checked on Amazon and found the prices ranging from around $20 to way over $60. That is pretty expensive for a cardboard box, don’t you think? Especially as we all are getting things shipped to us that most likely come in a cardboard box. If we spend an hour cutting and decorating that shipping box we have a wonderful place for our cat to lounge in and did not have to pay extra money.

The other day I saw a yarn ball at Walmart in the cat toy section for $9.00! Really? Just get a ball of yarn and roll it into a ball for your cat. That will cost you about $1. Yes, you need to roll and tie it so it does not fall apart, but I will show you how to make that in one of the How to… tutorials.

Another consideration is that cats like to play a lot of the time with things their human guardians use. Kati for example loves nothing more than playing with a twisty tie. She throws it in the air to catch it, bats it all over the house, hides it underneath the refrigerator or stove- and then sits in front of it and looks at you pleading to get it out  She is having the time of her life. And it is nothing more than a twisty tie. Plain, simple and comes for free with all different kinds of items, like electrical cords or even bread.
