My friend the Opossum

Do you have an opossum as a friend? No? Why not?

Opossum at healthycatdetective.com

Hi everyone,

Sorry mom and I were a little busy and have not really kept up with you all.

Mom is working and also preparing things for our store to sell, which should be up soon – and it does not only have cat themed items, but all different kinds like jewelry, baby clothes, etc.

She also finished the snuggle blankets, so now she has to get the package together to drop of at the shelter… and Christmas is coming, oh yeah – the tree is up. I like my tree and no, I am not climbing it this year, unless of course there is a lizzy friend hiding in it – then there are no guarantees….

opossum at healthycatdetective.comNow as you can see from our headline and the picture – I have a new friend – an opossum. Yes it is a real one and mom is a little apprehensive about it, but dad loves him and sometimes even feeds him some of my food.

He is very nice and quiet and we are not afraid of each other. I leave him alone and he does the same to me. He is really a very good guy. He eats the bugs and snails I do not like and he also eats dead animals and cleans the yard. So he is a very useful guy.

Mom read up about him and is fine with him being with me in the yard. Opossums are not scary animals. They are nocturnal and they are more scared of you. They can also play dead if they feel cornered, just like a lizard. But they don’t loose their tail, like lizards do. They just fall over.

They also carry their babies in a pouch, just like a kangaroo – they are America’s Marsupials.kati yawning at healthycatdetective.com

So if you have them in your yard, don’t chase them away. They are friendly and very useful. You want them in your yard.

So now I am ready to go to sleep. I will post a picture of our beautiful tree in my next post.

Do any of you have an opossum as a friend? If so, let me know and send me pictures.

Sorry, my pictures are a little fuzzy, but it was night and mom could not get a good shot, because my opossum was moving very fast.

A very big miau to everybody and have a great weekend!

The Joy of Hunting

Every cat likes to hunt. Does your cat hunt toys or is she also hunting bugs and other living animals?

kati-sitting-on-her-cat-tree-by-healthycatdetective-com

Hello everybody,

Hope your weekend is going great. Today I want to talk about the joy of hunting. And oh, what a joy it is….miau!!!

Every cat it born to hunt, no matter where she is born. Indoor and outdoor cats equally hunt. The only difference – outdoor or feral cats hunt for survival, and indoor cats hunt for fun.

I consider myself a semi-outdoor cat because dad and mom take me out on a leash, but I am still allowed to hunt bugs and lizards.

And when I am indoors, well, a cat wand with some feathers are a wonderful thing to hunt.

The other day I was out with dad and I brought a pretty good sized lizard home – oh whatkati playing with a lizard at healthycatdetective.com fun, well for me at least…. sorry Mr Lizard….

I kind of chased him around for a while, but as all lizards do, once he had enough he just played dead.

It is satisfying for a while, but then it gets boring and I want to go out again to get another lizards that is more cooperative.

kati playing with a lizard at healthycatdetective.comThis was my second hunt. But that one did the same thing – after a while he played dead.

So my conclusion – it is fun while it lasts and very rewarding. But playing with a toy is just as rewarding and lasts as long as I want, because mom and dad are very willing to play until I get tired.

So my dear friends, what do you hunt – live animals or feather toys? Let me know and if you have a questions, you can always write on my QA board.

Have a great weekend and a big Miau to everyone

My Lizard Addiction

Do you love lizards or iguanas?

Do you have them in your yard? Yes? Ok, I am coming over!!!

Lizard in the hallway by healthycatdetective.com

Hi my four and two legged friends,

Lizards! Oh I am addicted to them. I drive mom crazy when I bring them home with me.

Now, let me start at the beginning. When I was little and still an inside cat, once in a while a little lizard came in the door with mom or dad. Oh, what joy! Hunting, catching, playing!!! Just what a kitty heart desires!

And I got very good at it Emoji

Once I went outside I was in lizard heaven. Big ones and small ones, lizards and geckos, anything my little heart desires. Sometimes there is even an iguana. You see that beauty there? Let’s get a close up – oh yeah.iguana outside the window by healthycatdetective.com

Iguana on the window screen by healthycatdetective.comLizards are very active in the evening, so I make sure dad or mom takes me out late. Many times I can already see them from my window and once the door opens I pounce. Then I make sure I can get back in quickly and my harness is released.

Then I play with them by chasing them, carrying them around in my mouth and watching for any movement so I can pounce. I don’t want to hurt them, just play with them. And I do not want to eat them either, they do not taste good….

But unfortunately they do not last. Some that get away from me and hide underneath the stove or in the closet have a pretty good chance being discovered by mom and taken outside. But I have to admit, most of them do not survive and that is when mom is not happy with me – when she finds the lizzy grave yard.

But I cannot help myself, I am a great hunter and that is what I do. But mom never says anything or is mad at me. Mom does not do that. She never raises her voice. I don’t do things on purpose and I don’t bite into the lizzy on purpose. I just want to hold on and carry it to a quiet place where I can play with it.

Now that iguana you see in the picture – he was a little scary, sooo big and not afraid of me at all.

So I prefer lizards, and there are plenty of them in our backyard. I go hunting every night.Looking for lizard in tree pot by healthycatdetective.comShaking lizards from the tree by healthycatdetective.com

Here you can see me in trying to shake the lizards out of a tree pot and out of the little tree that is growing in the yard.

Looking for lizards in the lemongrass pots by healthycatdetective.comBut my favorite spot is in the lemongrass pots. There are always lizards to be found. I can just dive into the pots and dig for lizards. I can also hear them from all the way over atWaiting for a lizard by healthycatdetective.com the door. That’s where I usually sit in wait for any movement. And then I run and jump into the pot. I usually come out with a nice catch.

So my dear friends, I will now eat some treats and take a nap, so I am fresh and rested for my lizard hunting session tonight.

A happy miau to all of you and paws up!

Raccoons and Cats

Do cats and raccoons get along? Is your cat in danger if she encounters a raccoon?

Raccoon at night by healthycatdetective.com

My dear fellow furry friends,

Do you like other animals? Well, being a cat I prefer to choose my own friends. Think cats and cats, cats and dogs, cats and raccoons, cats and opossums.

From a small age I was not happy with fellow cats – sorry my furry friends. But I just wanted to protect my territory. So when dad took me out and I saw another cat, I ran and chased it away – big time. I know this was not nice, but I cannot help myself. Even big cats ran away from me. Mom was not happy with that behavior, because we have some homeless kitties and mom felt so sorry for them. She wanted to take care of those cats too, but I would notlittle raccoon by healthycatdetective.com let her.

Now little dogs are no problem for me. I don’t care about them at all. Our neighbor has several little ones like chihuahuas, they are annoying, but I just ignore them and they do the same. There are a couple of larger dogs in our neighborhood, but I only hear them, never see them.

My favorite time to go outside is when it gets dark, or is already late. We live in a residential neighborhood, but we do have a lake – very common in Florida. So there are some wild animals around too – no, nothing as scary as small raccoons atnight by healthycatdetective.comalligators. But we always had opossums and raccoons. And every spring/summer they have babies. I find them cute, but mom is not so amused by it. Mama animals protect their young at any cost. So our raccoons already attacked one of the residents in the stairway, so not a good situation. cute or not, they stand their ground and will attack when they have children.

So when I go outside my dad keeps me on a long leash – that way I can roam around wherever I want. But with mom it is a different story. She won’t let me go far. She always has me in her sight because of those wild animals.

Now once in a while I meet the raccoons and the opossums, but even dad pulls me back andTwo raccoons at night by healthycatdetective.com puts me in the house. Which does not prevent them to come around to our windows and doors.

The other day I was inside sleeping while dad was watching TV and I saw the raccoons in the parking lot, right outside my door. They were very close and they had their kids with them. It was a nice sight, at least for me.

But mom says they all carry deseases, besides having flees. You can get Baylisascaris infection (round worms) from raccoons, as well as Leptospirosis, which is a bacteria that even in humans, if not treated, can cause kidney damage, liver failure, meningitis and even death.

Two raccoons at night by healthycatdetective.comSo, as much as I like to be outside and make friends, it might be a good idea to stay away from wild animals.

Now it is time for my afternoon snack and a nice long nap.

Miau and leave me a comment below, if you ever encountered a raccoon or opossum.
